End of Season Round-up
22nd October 2014 - 0 comments
Last weekend's ARA endurance race has brought the local racing season to an end. Its always a good fun, but hotly contested event and this year enjoyed bright, but very windy conditions.

Its mid-October and the weather is definitely turning autumnal, but what a great summer we've had. We had good conditions for most race & practice sessions for the TT, Southern 100 and the Festival of Motorcycling that includes the MGP. The conditions made for some fantastic racing.

A few highlights include Bruce Anstey setting a new Mountain Course outright lap record ...

Michael Dunlop winning the Senior TT ...

and Peter Hickman breaking records to become the fastest TT newcomer.

It was great to see Dean Harrison making such progress in his road racing career. He dominated the Southern 100 meeting and put in some blistering performances on the TT course including his first win.

And what a season Dan Kneen has had. He won everything in sight on the Irish road racing scene and set a fantastic PB 129mph lap at the TT. He's really shown what he can do on competetive machinery with a great team behind him.

So that's about it for 2014 and we have a long dark winter to endure before we can look forward to more racing next spring.
MGP 2014
10th August 2014 - 0 comments
Just a few days to go to the start of what used to be the Manx Grand Prix and is now known as the festival of motorcycling that incorporates the MGP & Classic TT.

Well whatever you wish to call it it's always a great fortnight of road racing. The variety of old and new machinery always provides a riot of colour and a cacophony of glorious sounds. Usually good racing too ... from the excitement of the newcomers classes to the speed of some of the old hands. Always great local interest to follow too ... can't wait.
Southern 100 2014
12th July 2014 - 0 comments
My Southern 100 didn't quite go to plan as I only managed to make it to the Billown Circuit on two out of three evenings and missed the main race day altogether.

However, the weather and racing were terrific as always. Dean Harrison was virtually unstoppable this year but it was great to see Guy Martin retain his title as S100 Solo Champion.

Although Michael Dunlop was short of luck the week also saw some spectacular performances from the likes of Ivan Lintin and local boys Dan & Ryan Kneen.
Southern 100

We have the Southern 100 road races next week on the Isle of Man. I missed the S100 last year so I'm really looking forward to this as its probably my favourite event of the year.

Its a well organised meeting which always provides fast & close racing. All we need now is a decent weather forecast ...

Commitment

As usual I took photos at some of my favourite haunts but I also tried my hand at a couple of new locations this TT. The crossing at St Ninian's was one.

I've admired plenty of TT action shots from there in the past and often wondered whether I would be able to obtain similar results. What I hadn't reckoned for was the jaw dropping speed that the top runners flash through at. Even on an out-lap between the Grandstand and St Ninian's they reach a phenomenal speed.

The riders are totally committed to hurtling down Bray Hill as fast as possible and there is absolutely no margin for error. Road racing is not a sport for the faint of heart !
TT 2014 is over ... roll on 2015!

The fortnight has been a bit of a roller coaster and a real test for the organisers. Practice week was frustrated by inconsistent weather conditions, and race week unusually saw racing on every day. Top marks to the Clerk of the Course and his team for clear and decisive way they dealt with everything the weather gods could throw at them.

Thankfully when the sun came out it was clear we were going to be in for some fast & hot racing. The week provided great racing in all classes, but the high point for me was the Senior race. Run in perfect conditions it was blisteringly fast and very hotly contested.

Sadly we lost 2 racers. Road racing can be cruel and unforgiving, and our thoughts are with their family's and loved ones.

In terms of race results it was Michael Dunlop's week, but for me there were several other real highlights :-

- 'Bradford Bullet' Dean Harrison winning his first TT
- Cool Kiwi Bruce Anstey setting a new outright lap record
- Fastest ever newcomer Peter Hickman setting a 129mph lap
- 'Ramsey Rocket' Conor Cummins proving to himself and the rest of the world that he is back on his pre-crash form.
- The young guns on the podium for the lightweight TT which shows great potential for the future of the event.

The TT seems to be going from strength to strength. The crowds in attendance were definitely up over recent years and I understand bookings for next year are through the roof.

Well that's it for TT 2014, but we still have the Southern 100 and Classic TT/MGP road races to look forward to.

Wow! ... what an amazing debut on the formidable IOM TT circuit for newcomer Peter Hickman.

Two fine race performances this week so far with a 14th in the Superbike last Saturday and an epic 8th place finish in yesterday's Superstock with a fastest lap of 126.545mph
Electric Bikes

I haven't paid much attention to the SES Zero Class of electrically powered bikes until today. I've always admired the engineering that goes into their design and fabrication. I mean they look stunning standing still.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the experience of the bikes being ridden in anger. They don't have the internal combustion roar of the conventional bikes but have a rather futuristic howling whine. They don't hang about either. Mark Miller was one of the fastest machine through Greeba Bridge all afternoon.

Absolutely delighted that Conor Cummins made the podium in yesterday's Superbike race.

A truly great achievement and testament to his determination to recover his form from 2010...
Superbike Race 31-05-14

Michael Dunlop successfully quashed any doubts about the BMW's ability to complete six racing laps around the gruelling IOM Mountain course. He stamped his authority on the race from the off and, as requested, presented BMW with their 1st TT win in 75 years

In a superb race run in fantastic conditions MD set lap records and won by a margin over over 20 seconds against some distinguished opposition. Well done that man!
MD Sets Fastest Practice Lap
30th May 2014 - 0 comments
Michael Dunlop has set the fastest practice lap of TT 2014 at 131.671 mph ahead of tomorow's Superbike race.

If the weather holds, the race pace on Saturday should be awesome
Thursday Practice
29th May 2014 - 0 comments
Another night of poor conditions for TT practice. Wet roads on the mountain for the sideacars and then after a delay a late start and poor light for the solos.

Thankfully conditions didn't seem to hinder William Dunlop's progress through Greeba Bridge.

Despite having to prior TT data, and very little testing, Michael Dunlop is using all his talent and experience to get some terrific practice lap times logged.

All this on a new bike is very impressive and he certainly seems determined to bag a big bike win for BMW.

Fantastic to see Conor Cummins making the most of his Honda ride this year.

He definitely seems to be on the pace and should be real contender for honours come race week.
130mph Lap

Laid back Kiwi Bruce Anstey has set the pace once again in this evening's practice session.

Without drama his riding style is old school and makes 130 mph laps look effortless and smooth !
First TT Practice

A weather delayed 1st night of TT practicing got underway in near perfect conditions last night. I took a trip up to Brandywell where it was cold but the light was kind.

Good to see John McGuinness posting some seriously promising times despite his recent wrist injury.
New Lens

Bad News: The used 200-400 zoom lens I bought to cover this season's road racing has developed a fault refusing to auto-focus and has had to go back to the supplier.

Good News : The supplier, MPB Photographic, have sent me a replacement which arrived, as promised, by courier today.

I've now bought several items of 2nd hand photographic equipment from MBP and can't fault them. They carry a huge range of quality used gear at great prices. They offer a fair part-exchange system and their after sales support is second to none.

I thoroughly recommend them - go check them out ...

Dan Kneen

What a great start to the season Dan has had!
Winning on his Superbike as a newcomer at both Cookstown and Tandragee
The talent was always there, but the new found form is due at least in part to having a great bike with the support of good experienced team. Riding for the John Burrows BE racing outfit seems to have given Dan a real boost this year.

The TT is now very near and it will be really interesting to watch his progress on a course that he knows well. Always fast, an injury free and confident Dan Kneen could do great things. I really can't wait !
New Logo Update
14th May 2014 - 0 comments
I'm very pleased to show off the new Northline Photography logo which I'll be using on future images.

Sid from Lucky Shot Images is a skilled graphic designer and quickly understood the brief and came up with this simple yet effective logo which I think brilliantly conveys the motorsport theme encompassed in most of my work. Sid's also a talented photographer so check out his FB page.

Lucky Shot Images Face Book

To top it off he's a thoroughly good guy and has suggested that we use his framed print to try and raise some money for a charitable cause which of course I'm delighted to help with.

Thanks Sid!
New Logo ...

Any budding graphic designers fancy creating a new Northline Photography logo/watermark for use on my sports photography images ...Perhaps in exchange for a framed print of your choice.

The Brief : I'm looking for a fresh logo/watermark. The existing one which I've used for several years is simple which I like but a little bland. I shoot predominantly 2 wheeled motorsport (road racing, mx, etc) so I'd like something to identify with the excitement of high speed motor sport. As a photographer the 'image' is everything so I'm looking for something that will enhance rather than detract from the photo. I guess that's why I've used a translucent watermark to date. A dash of colour ...maybe a graphic feature ... over to you :)
Any questions fire away.
